‘SNL’ Channels ‘Letterman’ in Hilarious Roast of New York Sports Doormat

As part of a recent 'Weekend Update' segment, the writers at 'Saturday Night Live' took a bit of a shot at the New York Jets, one of the lovable losers in the group of "big four" professional sports teams in the New York City metropolitan area.

The joke brought back shades of David Letterman, who similarly targeted another miserable New York sports franchise in some of his most famous segments as host of The Late Show.

There's roughly a thirty year gap between jokes from Letterman and SNL, and yet somehow, both of these jokes are still extremely relevant today.

SNL Channels 'Letterman' in Roast of New York Jets on Weekend Update

This past weekend, Saturday Night Live's hit news segment 'Weekend Update' did something that comedy shows in New York have been doing for decades now: they made a joke at the expense of the New York Jets.

The show took a not-so-subtle shot at the Jets for their years of futility in the NFL, and somehow, even after countless jokes made about that subject, this jab from SNL was still very funny.

The Jets continue to be the gift-that-keeps-on-giving for sports fans looking for a quick laugh.

Not only was the joke itself funny, but it also brought back shades of  legendary comedian and show host, David Letterman. In one of Letterman's first "Top Ten List" segments back in 1993, he made another New York team the "butt of the joke" while listing the Top Ten Least Popular Alcoholic Beverages.

Here was the list in its entirety, including his jab at another New York sports doormat:

Unfortunately, for fans of both the Mets and Jets, these types of jokes will remain funny until either of the teams win a championship. Both teams are considered to be the "little brother" compared to their cross-town rival (the Yankees and Giants, respectively), and have been unable to shirk that reputation for decades.

With Steve Cohen at the helm, the Mets should be able to turn the tides on their title drought sooner, rather than later. Even with the quarterback drama still on full-display, it appears as though the Jets are heading in the right direction, too.

Until each franchise lifts a trophy at the end of their respective season, however, the jokes will continue to fly, and they'll likely continue to be funny.
