For the first time in school history, the Union College hockey team is the ECAC regular season champions.

The Dutchmen shutout Princeton 5-0 at Messa Rink on Saturday to claim the top spot in the league and earn the #1 seed in the upcoming ECAC Tournament.

5th ranked Union captured the ECAC regular season title by 1 point over 2nd place Yale.  The Dutchmen came into tonight's season finale' against the Tigers either needing a win, a tie and a Yale loss or tie or a loss coupled with a Yale loss.

All of those other scenarios didn't matter as Union scored 3 goals in the 1st period - two by Daniel Carr.  They added two more in the 3rd for the final margin.

Thanks to their #1 seed for the ECAC Tourney, Union (25-7-4 overall, 17-3-2 in ECAC) will have a first round bye.  They'll host a best-of-three series @ Messa Rink from March 11-13th.

I interviewed Nate Leaman (and his son, Ty) after the game to get his thoughts on the historic night for the Union College hockey program.
