The New York Yankees swept the Boston Red Sox in their four game series over the weekend. The Bronx Bombers won five of eight in their last ten games over the defending World Series champions. The Red Sox have forty eight games left on their regular season schedule but trail the Yankees by fourteen and half games in the AL East standings.

In the American Wild Card standings as of Monday, the Red Sox trail the Cleveland Indians by six and half games for the top spot. Plus the Tampa Bay Rays who currently sit in second place, hold a five game lead over the Boston Red Sox. This eight game losing streak for the Red Sox may have sealed the fate of the 2019 regular season. The World Series champions are almost a certainty to not qualify for the playoffs and have a chance to defend their title in October.
