Head coach Glenn Clark has done a remarkable job in turning around the Albany FireWolves from a three-win team a year ago to a playoff team this season.
The days of saying "the Albany NLL team" are rapidly coming to an end. Tomorrow at the Times Union Center we find out the official name of the Lacrosse team that will call the arena on South Pearl Street home. Today I introduce you to another member of that team, Colton Watkinson.
The new era of Indoor or "Box" Lacrosse here in Albany is only months away. In the 18 years since the Capital Region hosted the "Albany Attack" the outdoor version of lacrosse has gained a lot of steam. So is there a difference between the two games and if so what is it? Albany NLL Transition player John LaFontaine's description of Box Lacrosse paints a seriously exciting picture of what fans will see at the Times Union Center later this year.
I realize no one is happy the world of sports was forced to shut down during the COVID-19 pandemic but when you see what Reilly O'Connor was doing on the field pre pandemic it makes sense he's READY to get back to work. O'Connor's offensive game was never in question but after 27 goals in 18 games during the 2018-2019, then 19 goals in the 11 games before the 2019-2020 season was halted. The man is ready to get back to work.
We've recently had the opportunity to speak to the Albany NLL team Captain Brett Manney and then their 2019 top draft pick Andrew Kew. As excitement around the sport of lacrosse grows and fans here in the Capital Region prepare for the upcoming team announcement it's great to meet some of the men that will hopefully propel Albany to the top of the National Lacrosse League.
The news that Albany would be getting a new indoor lacrosse team is hitting even better than I thought it would. The area is primed perfectly for a new team right now. The success of the Great Danes of the Unversity of Albany has more and more Capital Region residents paying attention to lacrosse. It's only fitting that the team who will call Albany home would have a UA alum on it. Joe Resetarits played for head coach Scott Marr and the Great Danes from 2009 to 2012 and now he's coming back with the Albany NLL team(name currently being decided).
If it feels like things are moving super fast for the Albany NLL lacrosse team just wait until they get on the field at the Times Union Center. It's been just over two weeks since we found out the Capital Region was getting professional indoor lacrosse back but we already know when the season will begin.
And then there were 3! The National Lacrosse League team, the Albany NLL, recently relocated to the Capital Region and needs an official name! After over 1,000 submissions the team has narrowed it down to 3 options. Here they are:
