With the success Will Brown had in his first year as head coach and General Manager of the Albany Patroons, I would be surprised if he’s not back next season.
I'm not sure what coach Brown is thinking, but the Patroons need to pull out all the stops to make sure he’s back at the Washington Avenue Armory next season.
It was the University at Albany's first trip to the NCAA Division I men's basketball tournament. Head coach Will Brown would take the Great Danes four more times. However, the game on March 17, 2006 was more than special, on and off the court. I was at the Wachovia Center in Philadelphia with the team and will never forget the experience of that game. Albany alumni across the country were digging out their old 'Albany State' sweatshirts after that program changing performance.
As the University of Albany Men's Basketball team prepares to face NJIT in the first round of the America East tournament head coach Will Brown sounds prepared and calm. When we spoke to Will Brown before this season began it was clear that he was excited to get his team on the court for a few reasons. Obviously, with the COVID-19 pandemic Coach was just happy to play ball but he also gets to coach his son Jackson Brown this year. When you've coached as long as Brown has there aren't a lot of "firsts" left out there so coaching his son for the first time clearly was fun for him.
The University of Albany Men's Basketball team has been on pause since Tuesday January 26th. Which means they can come resume basketball activities as soon as Thursday February 4th. in the interest of athlete safety that means this weekends games against U Mass Lowell will be pushed back to next weekend. If all these moving pieces are confusing and frustrating to me and you, can you imagine what the team must be going through. Head Coach Will Brown said the plan is to keep the players active.
Coach Will Brown has been the man pacing the court and coaching up the UAlbany Great Danes for 20 years and this season will present at least two firsts. I actually thought that after being a successful head coach for 20 years Coach Brown wouldn't be a huge fan of change and the new challenges it presents but you can hear in Coach Brown's voice he not only doesn't have an issue with these changes, he's excited to face them.
UAlbany Men's Basketball Coach Will Brown has been navigating this crazy time and has some unique issues to handle. Not only is he forced to stay in touch with his players through video conferencing, recruiting via video an not in person but having players in Australia is another level. In the middle of all those challenges coach Brown is still finding time to help the American Cancer Society raise money through Coaches Vs Cancer.
Last Saturday night the UAlbany Great Danes men's basketball team beat the Niagara Purple Eagles 84 - 80. It was a really nice win for the program and a milestone for head coach Will Brown. Brown now has 300 career wins.
