UAlbany Men’s Basketball Won’t Play At SEFCU Arena Until December
The latest blow to Capital Region sports thanks to the COVID-19 Pandemic has hit the University of Albany Men's Basketball team...again. The current "Full Campus Pause" has shut down practice for the Great Danes and will force the team to cancel the home opener against Marist Red Fox's originally scheduled for November 28th at the SEFCU Arena.
Sadly the bad news for the Great Danes doesn't stop there, the men will no longer participate in the Basketball Hall of Fame Tip-Off Tournament at Mohegan Sun. The Great Danes were scheduled to play Drexel and Quinnipiac on December 3 and 4. So as the men's schedule stands right now the next game they could play would be December 19th and 20th against the UMBC Retrievers at SEFCU Arena. So with a little luck, the 2020 - 2021 UAlbany season will tip off in mid to late December. If no further changes are made to the schedule that would leave the Great Danes with 19 games, 11 of which would be here in Albany.
As it stands no fans will be allowed to attend the games at this time. A UAlbany press release explains the potential of fans at SEFCU Arena in the future:
Due to current New York State COVID-19 guidelines, fan attendance at sporting events is prohibited. UAlbany Athletics is committed to adhering to these guidelines but will monitor the situation closely in the event any change allows fan attendance at SEFCU Arena this winter. Should current restrictions lift, the department will be in communication regarding how to secure tickets for the upcoming 2020-21 season.
