While the NFL Draft did not see any players from the University at Albany get chosen, it did end happily for two Great Danes prospects, as linebacker Jon Morgan and running back Drew Smith signed contracts as undrafted free agents.

Morgan signed with the Detroit Lions after a career in which he recorded 247 total tackles, 106 of which came in the 2011 season. His lateral speed and ability to cover NFL caliber tight ends are question marks, but one would assume that his contributions are going to come as a special teams player while the Lions evaluate his professional capabilities.

Smith will stay in the state of New York, as the Guilderland High graduate signed a three year deal with the Buffalo Bills. Smith rushed for 3,196 yards in his career, racked up 767 receiving yards, and scored 45 touchdowns (not including his five passing touchdowns). He is second all time at UAlbany in both rushing yards and all-purpose yards.

Hopefully we will be seeing two Great Danes playing on Sundays this season.
