It is no secret that the "Dog Days" of summer have not been kind to the New York Yankees. Since the estival solstice on June 21st, the Bombers are 24-30. Yet, Aaron Boone and his team still own an 8 game lead in the American League East, plenty of wiggle room for the skipper to get his team back on course. A little unexpected bullpen help could be more than music to Boone's ears.

The "expected" bullpen help is, of course, Clay Holmes. According to Kristi Ackert of nydailynews.com, Boone told reporters, “He’s going out to throw today and if that goes well and the way he’s feeling this morning, I think we’re going to be in a good spot. He’s gonna get on the mound today actually for probably just like 10 pitches or so. So I feel like we’re moving in a good direction.” So that is very good news for the beleaguered bullpen but there could be more "unexpected" help on the way.

Ackert reported that the Yankees have cautious optimism that left-handed relief pitcher Zach Britton, who had elbow surgery last October may be available to the team in the stretch run and possibly the playoffs. However, that would be an incredibly fast recovery. “That’s what I’ve tried to be guarded on,” Boone told nydailynews.com. “As much as I think there’s a chance and we certainly would love to get Zack Britton back in the mix with us, first things first is I want to make sure that he is physically in that really good spot."

Boone reflected on Britton's recovery. "This is an important time for him. It’s been a really good, I think successful journey from surgery in his rehab. So I’m certainly hopeful, but I don’t want to put any expectations on it. I just want him to get to a point where he’s back and really feeling like he’s ready to impact us. But the biggest thing is getting him all the way back, because it’s been a pretty good timeline for him since that surgery.” Even the thought of Zach Britton available in late September is enough to keep buoy Boone's spirits these days.
